Recycle at Work
Waste Assessments
Did you know? Successful recycling programs have these things in common: Management support Recycling champion(s) Assessment & analysis A workable program Education & recognition Ongoing evaluation |
You're in the assessment-analysis phase of establishing a new recycling program, which means you've probably already:
• Identified a need to change current practices
• Gained management support
• Designated a recycling champion/team
Next, establish a better understanding of current disposal and purchasing practices. Conduct a facility walk-through and/or waste sort.
Then, identify potential recycling markets and service providers for the targeted waste stream.
Examine disposal costs and use these basic steps as a guide for determining the recycling cost-benefits:
• Calculate existing monthly waste service costs
• Estimate projected downsized waste service costs
• Compare these costs to determine the economic benefits
• Calculate the environmental benefits
In doing so, you will be able to make recommendations for program planning and implementation, and create a baseline from which to measure success.
A Workable Program
Because participation is critical to the program's success, it's important to establish a simple, reliable and visible collection system. Plan your program carefully and design a system that:
• Supports clear, measurable goals
• Is part of your company's standard operating procedure (SOP)
• Meets the needs of each individual work station to encourage participation
• Gives all participants clear and regular directions about their part in the program
Education & Recognition

Ongoing Evaluation & Monitoring
Keep accurate records on the types and amounts of material collected. Use this information as well as employee feedback to evaluate the program and make changes as needed.
