Pollution Prevention

Local pretreatment programs have a unique opportunity to identify industries that could greatly benefit from Pollution Prevention (P2) technical assistance. P2 can result in the reduction of pollutant loadings to publicly owned treatment works including biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), fats, oils and grease (FOG), and heavy metals. Incorporation of P2 into existing industrial wastewater pretreatment programs offers many benefits.

Benefits to incorporating P2 in existing industrial wastewater pretreatment programs:

  • Reduction in high or very high strength surcharge fees
  • Improvements to processes and operations
  • Reduction in energy costs

Companies who wish to have an on-site P2 training/assessment can request information from Industrial Services. We can work with you to conduct or arrange a P2 assessment. By conducting a P2 assessment, industry staff will benefit by gaining additional skills and knowledge specific to their operations and activities.

A great resource for businesses is the Local Materials Exchange Program called The Interchange, a quarterly newsletter and website providing FREE exchange services for businesses with excess or unwanted materials.
